Robert Carpenter Shareholder and Lead Trial Counsel

Rob Carpenter is a Shareholder and Lead Trial Counsel at Sprott, Newsom, Quattlebaum & Messenger, P.C., where his practice is devoted exclusively to the defense of physicians, dentists, nurses, hospitals, and other healthcare providers in medical malpractice and professional liability matters. He represents individual providers, group practices, hospital-employed clinicians, and healthcare facilities in high-exposure cases across Texas, including matters involving major health systems as well as smaller standalone hospitals.

Rob has practiced law since 2010 and has focused exclusively on medical malpractice defense since joining the firm in 2018. He has defended hundreds of healthcare professionals statewide and has substantial jury trial experience. Rob has served as first chair in multiple jury trials resulting in defense verdicts, including directed verdicts, and has acted as second chair in more than a dozen additional jury trials. His trial experience includes cases involving surgical negligence, anesthesia and airway injuries, retained foreign objects, dental malpractice, diagnostic error, and post-procedure complications.

In addition to his civil litigation practice, Rob regularly represents healthcare professionals in licensing and disciplinary matters before administrative agencies, including the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners and the Texas Board of Nursing. He has successfully resolved numerous investigations with no action taken and has obtained dismissals and non-suits in presuit and pretrial settings through effective expert challenges and dispositive motion practice.

Rob frequently serves as lead counsel and supervises and mentors associates in case development, discovery strategy, expert preparation, and trial presentation. He is known by clients and claims professionals for his command of complex medical records, disciplined litigation strategy, and ability to clearly communicate risk, exposure, and case posture throughout the life of a file.

Rob’s professional approach is grounded in discipline, preparation, and leadership, traits he developed as an Eagle Scout and applies throughout every phase of litigation, from early case assessment and rigorous discovery through to trial presentation and resolution.

Before joining Sprott, Newsom, Quattlebaum & Messenger, Rob practiced plaintiff-side legal malpractice litigation, experience that provides valuable insight into plaintiff strategy, case valuation, and risk assessment, now applied to his healthcare defense practice. Prior to becoming an attorney, he worked as a high school teacher, experience that continues to inform his courtroom presence and witness preparation.

Rob is licensed to practice in all Texas state courts and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Texas. He earned his Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law and his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University.
